Board of Education News:  Programs That Make a Difference

At the February 9, 2006 meeting, the “Program Highlights” section focused on Student Assessment Procedures.  Staff discussed the many different ways in which student progress is assessed on a day-to-day basis.  The high school has developed rubrics, or assessment tools, similar to those of other high schools, which are being piloted this year.  These rubrics are available on the school website for the public to view.  At the middle school, formal assessments, spiral reviews, writing, CMT readiness projects, interdisciplinary units and informal assessments are used to evaluate progress.  For the last few years the third grade has been working on developing new assessments.  Formal assessment in Reading and Language Arts will be aligned with the Connecticut Language Handbook, which is modeled after the CMT.  The upcoming CMT will be the first time third-graders will be taking the formal Mastery Test in the content areas of Reading, Writing, and Math.  Daily math warm-ups are used to assess, reinforce, and maintain skills introduced throughout the year.  The Board and audience members were impressed with the variety of assessments incorporated into daily activities.  If you are interested in learning more about “Programs that Make a Difference,” watch for these segments to be televised on Munivision, Channel 13.
