Board of Education News: Programs That Make a Difference
At the April 12, 2007 meeting, the “Program Highlights” section focused on the Future Problem Solving Program at the middle and high schools. Students from 3 teams along with their coaches, Terry Becker and Lisa Thomas, were recognized for their outstanding efforts in their first year of competition. Mrs. Becker showed a PowerPoint presentation about the program. She said the international program involves thousands of students and teaches children “how to think, but not what to think.” She said a six-step model is followed for building dynamic, creative thinking. Students went to two different seminars. Over 250,000 students participate each year in teams consisting of three or four students. The sixth grade team, including Michael Clausen, Alyssa Keeney, Moira Riordan, and Emma Thomas, won 1st place in the state conference and will be eligible to go on to the international competition. Their trophy was on display at the meeting. There were also two grade 10 teams this year. One team, who won 2nd place in their division of the competition, consisted of Ashlyn Anderson, Brittany Fowler, Sarah Marchand, and Amanda McGowan. The other team included Kyle Beausoleil, Michael Icart, Tate Lang, and Kristina Zoghbi. Through this program the students enjoyed exposure to different topics, learned about time management, stretched their creativity, and found their hidden talents.
