Overview

This is a full year mathematics course in basic geometry. Students learn essential geometric terms and improve their inductive and deductive reasoning skills.  The course integrates hands-on laboratory activities, cooperative learning opportunities and teacher- led discussion and instruction that teach important math concepts by emphasizing problem-solving and decision-making through real-life and workplace examples.

Academic Expectations:

In this course, students will be given an opportunity to develop mastery of the

following school-wide expectations for learning described in the CHS mission statement:

-To apply math skills in practical and theoretical situations

-To speak and listen effectively

Text and Materials:

  • Textbook—  Larson, Boswell, and Stiff Geometry Concepts and Skills McDougal Littell 2003.
  • Notebook Folder—a notebook folder for each unit will be provided.
  • Scientific calculator
  • Protractor
  • Ruler with both centimeters and inches
  • Pencil

Class Requirements:

Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared for class each day.  You are to have the text and materials listed above in addition to a COMPLETED homework assignment. Homework reinforces class concepts and facilitates exam preparation.  Expect to have a written homework assignment after each class.  Homework must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due.  All class work and homework assignments are to be completed in pencil.

Students will be provided with a folder at the beginning of each unit.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep the folder organized.  If a folder is lost it is the students responsibility to replace the folder and its contents including completion of all assignments.  Folders from each unit will be graded according to the provided rubric and will count as a quiz grade.

Tests will be announced ahead of time with ample opportunity to study and prepare.  The class prior to a test will be used as a review session.  The review will cover expectations for the test and provide the opportunity to answer any questions.  Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.  Projects will be given out periodically throughout the year.  Some class time will be given to work on projects, but it is expected that the majority of project work will be done outside of classroom time.

Miscellaneous:

I encourage you to get additional help as soon as you begin to feel uncomfortable with what we are doing or with what I seem to expect the class to have grasped.  Try to see me ahead of time so we can decide on a time and place that suits both of us.

Additionally, you may seek help from a classmate or tutor.  Tutors can be arranged through Mrs. Lillis or the guidance department.
