AP / ECE Statistics
Course Syllabus 2011 - 2012
Introduction:
This course is a University of Connecticut Cooperative course (part of the Early College Experience program). As such, students in this class who obtain a grade of 73 or higher will receive four University of Connecticut college credits for UConn Stats 1100.
The one key part of obtaining UConn credit students need to be aware of is that you must receive a passing grade on the cumulative final exam in order to receive credit, regardless of how the exam grade may average in with your work throughout the year. Additionally, no student may receive a final grade on their UConn transcript that is more than one letter grade different from their final exam grade. This is UConn’s policy which we are required to follow. (However, please note that it is possible to obtain credit on your high school transcript even if UConn credit is not awarded.) Finally, you should know that taking this class cannot hurt your college GPA. If you are not awarded credit, your UConn transcript will show that you “audited” the course (meaning you took it without expecting credit). An audit grade never counts against your grade point average.
This course will also be an AP course. Every student enrolled in this class will take the AP Statistics exam in May. Taking this exam may help you obtain college credit if you choose to attend a college or university that does not accept transfer credits from UConn, and may also help you obtain credit even if you struggle on the final exam in June. Additionally, good performance in AP classes can help boost your credentials on college applications and scholarship applications.
You will find it necessary to have a graphing calculator for this class. The TI-83 Plus (or newer) is recommended. Some calculators are available in class, but these will not be available to you for homework completion.
Class Preparation:
Students in this class are expected to come to class prepared each day. The required
materials for class include:
- Completed homework assignment
- Pencil
- Notebook – It is recommended that you have a 3 ring binder vs. a spiral notebook. The notebook should include:
a) Class Notes
b) Returned Homework Assignments
c) Returned Tests & Lab Reports
d) Handouts & Worksheets distributed in class
On some occasions you may need to use your textbook in class. It is a good idea to have your book available in your locker, and I will notify you at the beginning of class if you need to get it for that day’s lesson. It is not necessary to carry it with you on a daily basis.
Grading System:
Each quarter grade is calculated as follows:
Homework Average 30%
MINITAB Lab Average 20%
Test Average 50%
For your high school transcript, your final grade is calculated as follows:
Each quarter grade counts three times toward your final grade,
the Midterm Exam counts once toward your final grade,
and the Final Exam counts once toward your final grade
(making a total of 14 grades to be averaged for your final grade).
Assignments:
- Expect to have a written homework assignment after each class.
- Tests are given at the end of each chapter. These will be announced ahead of time with ample opportunity for students to study & prepare.
- When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed, get the missed notes, and check with me on when the missed assignment(s) is due. It is not appropriate to walk into class the day you return to school and expect the whole class to wait while you find out what you have missed. You need to take care of this before or after school.
- You can also use www.mygradebook.com to find out what assignment(s) you may have missed due to absence. Additionally, all class notes are posted on my page on the school’s website. Notes are generally updated once a week.
- Once we have taken a chapter test, no additional work will be accepted for that chapter.
Extra Help:
It is not unusual for any student (regardless of how good they are) to run into trouble from time to time. As soon as you feel lost or confused, come see me! I’m happy to help you be as successful as possible. This year I will be available every day before school, and most days after school for help. However, if you need to see me at another time, check with me ahead of time so we can arrange some extra help time that works for both of us.
