Welcome to
Third Grade
It is our hope that your child will have a tremendous year of academic growth in third grade as he or she transitions from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. As a cohesive team of teachers, we consistently collaborate to share ideas and set high academic goals for our students.
We believe in adhering to a balanced curriculum, which engages students in a variety of learning environments. Students will learn through whole group instruction, small group instruction, partnered learning, and independent investigations. Whenever possible students will learn “by doing” as they engage in “hands-on” activities.
Third grade is a pivotal year for your child. It is a year where your child will first encounter The Connecticut State Mastery Testing. The demands and expectations are very high. As teachers, our goal is to instill both a love of learning and meet these very high standards.
We believe parents play a vital role in helping us meet these goals. Research supports that children's academic success is closely linked to the parental involvement in their school learning. We are committed to working closely with parents to ensure their child makes progress thoughout their school year. Recognizing each child comes to school with a wide range of background knowledge and academic skills, it is our goal to provide your child with a full year of rich academic growth.

Academic Supplies
The most important communication tool for a third grader is a sturdy folder to safely deliver notices and homework. Trapper Keepers are not appropriate for third graders due to lack of desk space.
Students should have a good supply of sharpened pencils, as this is the most important tool used throughout the day. A pencil box containing crayons, colored pencils, markers, and glue sticks are also appropriate for third graders. Similar supplies should be kept on hand at home for projects and homework activities.

Homework Expectations and Routines
Students are expected to study their spelling words daily.
We also require students to read for a minimum of 15 minutes on a daily basis. This is recorded on a weekly Reading Log. This may be due on Monday or Friday depending on the homeroom requirements. Math homework is given Monday through Thursday. As a commitment to our partnership, we require that parents sign and monitor their child’s Reading Log weekly.
Students are expected to be responsible about completing and returning homework to school. There are consequences for not completing homework on time.
