Health Guidelines

In the interest of your child’s health and the health of others please cooperate in observing the following:

• If your child must be absent from school please call the nurse at 742-4529 with the reason for the absence before 9am each day.
• Report all contagious diseases to the nurse.
• If your child has a fever, or has vomiting and/or diarrhea please keep her/him home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal or vomiting/diarrhea resolves.
• Children diagnosed with strep throat should stay home until they have been on a doctor prescribed antibiotic for 24 hours and temperature has returned to normal.
• Students with undiagnosed skin rashes (other than poison ivy) should visit their physician for diagnosis and treatment. 
• A physician’s note may be required for prolonged or frequent absences. 
• A doctor’s note is required to exclude from gym/recess and return to these activities. Please keep in mind students with casts, splints, or sutures are not allowed to participate in gym class.
• Head lice is an occasional problem in schools.  Please check your child’s head periodically at home and notify the school nurse if head lice or nits are found.
• Children with special health needs should be brought to the attention of the school nurse.  This information is kept confidential and it can be very important to a successful experience in school.  Examples of such needs are as follows:
  • ALLERGIES, especially those that could be life threatening such as a SEVERE FOOD ALLERGY or BEE STING ALLERGY
  • Conditions that may affect your child’s health/safety such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, heart disease, etc.
  • Vision, hearing, or speech difficulties

Medication in School

Under Connecticut State Statutes (sec. 10-212 A & B) Connecticut State Department of Education and Health students are not allowed to take medication at school without a written note from a physician and parent/guardian.  Students may not carry medication of any kind at school, nor are they allowed to take medication without supervision.

Every effort should be made to administer medication at home, as it represents a disruption in the student’s school day.  If your physician feels that medication is necessary during the school day, please submit a completed Medication Authorization Form, which is available in the Health Office before medication is brought to school.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS INCLUDES ALL TYPES OF MEDICATION - PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS AS WELL AS OVER THE COUNTER DRUGS (The only exception is Acetaminophen.) A form must be filled out for each medication and renewed for each school year. The medication must be brought to the nurse by the parent or guardian in the original pharmacist labeled or commercial container.
