Initiative Achievement

Coventry Public Schools is in the early stages of developing a 10-year comprehensive plan to shape the future of our school buildings. Recognizing that many of the district’s schools were constructed in the 1950s and 1960s, the Board set a goal of initiating a comprehensive facilities study during the 2023-2024 school year. This study assessed the condition of existing facilities and identified potential areas for improvement.

The study’s findings were presented to the community in a public forum, followed by breakout discussions where building administrators collaborated with attendees to envision the future of Coventry’s school facilities. Community feedback strongly favored the development of new, energy-efficient buildings equipped with modern technology and upgraded HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems to create positive, welcoming environments for students. More than 65 community members participated in the presentation and discussions.

In response, the Board established an ad hoc committee to explore the feasibility of constructing a Pre-K-5 facility. At their initial meeting, the committee reviewed the findings from the facilities study. To gain further insight, they scheduled site visits to recently built schools in neighboring districts, including Mansfield, to observe designs that address future educational needs. The Mansfield visit took place in mid-March, with a visit to Tolland planned for later this spring. These visits aim to gather best practices for creating energy-efficient, future-ready learning environments.

Following the site visits, the committee will reconvene to evaluate whether to recommend a formal proposal to the full Board. If the Board supports the initiative, they may request that the Town Council consider establishing a School Building Committee.

This process involves multiple steps and careful consideration of various factors, including community support, funding, and the long-term sustainability of our current facilities. The district remains committed to ensuring that our schools continue to serve students effectively for years to come.
