Continue development and expansion of the dual enrollment program.

Schools - Coventry High School

Action Steps

  • Collaborate with higher education partners and provide professional development for CHS teachers as part of the implementation of the six new dual enrollment courses planned for 2024-2025
  • Explore other existing CHS courses that might be aligned for dual enrollment, and identify Grade 11 students who have not yet taken college credit bearing courses and engage them in dual enrollment opportunities.

Initiative Achievement

The expansion of the Dual Enrollment Program represents a significant step toward increasing learning opportunities and college access for our high school students. This expansion includes the addition of several new courses at quality universities, such as Psychology at the University of Bridgeport, Human Anatomy and Physiology and Human Immunity at Quinnipiac University, and Genetics at Sacred Heart University. These new offerings broaden the range of academic subjects available to students, allowing them to gain college-level knowledge in various fields while still in high school. Additionally, the district has developed and implemented the Computer Science for Engineers dual enrollment course in alignment with the University of Connecticut (UCONN), further expanding opportunities for students in STEM fields.

One of the key developments this year has been the refinement of the Program of Studies, which now includes interactive links to both Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment courses. This enhancement, made in collaboration with the technology department, makes it easier for students, parents, and educators to navigate and understand the academic pathways available, including the dual enrollment options. This digital accessibility not only streamlines the enrollment process but also ensures students can make informed decisions about their course selections based on their interests and future career goals.

Research consistently supports the value of dual enrollment programs, showing that they significantly expand learning opportunities and college access. Dual enrollment is evidence-based and has demonstrated broad positive impacts on student outcomes, including increased academic success, improved college attendance, and higher graduation rates. Dual enrollment courses are viewed as a strong option by students, parents, educators, and policymakers alike, as they align with secondary and postsecondary education systems, providing a smoother transition to college.

One of the most compelling benefits of dual enrollment is that it allows students to experience college-level coursework while still in high school, with the added support and resources available to them as high school students. This experience helps prepare them for the social and academic demands of college, reducing the likelihood that they will need to take remedial, non-credit-bearing courses upon enrolling in college. Furthermore, students who earn college credits while in high school are more likely to attain a college degree, as they accumulate credits early and build a stronger academic foundation.

Another important advantage of dual enrollment is the financial support it offers. These programs provide discounted tuition, which reduces the overall cost of college for students, particularly those from families with financial challenges. This cost reduction increases the number of students who can attend and complete college, making higher education more accessible to a broader range of students.

Overall, students who participate in dual enrollment programs tend to have improved high school attendance, are more likely to apply to college, attend college, and persevere to graduation. Additionally, they often graduate on time, further underscoring the long-term positive impacts of these programs on student success. The expansion of the Dual Enrollment Program in Coventry not only provides students with invaluable academic opportunities, but also serves as a critical tool in preparing them for future educational and career success.
