Initiative Achievement
This year, Coventry Grammar School (CGS) staff has focused on completing the development of the final two competencies of the Portrait of the Graduate rubrics: Empowered Citizen and Authentic Innovator. These competencies are being integrated across all content areas, with special attention given to how they can align with and enhance existing curricula. The integration process is ongoing, with the mapping of these competencies across content areas still under consideration. The primary focus for this year has been the implementation of the new Wit & Wisdom literacy program, which has taken precedence. However, the goal is to finalize the mapping of these competencies for the 2025-2026 curriculum cycle, ensuring the competencies are embedded within the new literacy framework.
At the G. H. Robertson School (GHR), the Portrait of the Graduate rubrics for all five competencies have been fully adopted by the staff. Teachers have worked collaboratively to identify where and how each rubric, including the Authentic Innovator rubric, fits into their teaching practices. For example, in science, the Authentic Innovator rubric is used to assess student creativity, problem-solving, and innovative thinking. Teachers have mapped out the units in which each competency is taught and assessed, ensuring the rubrics are used consistently throughout the school year.
At the Capt. Nathan Hale School (CNH), the Authentic Innovator rubric was reviewed and adopted in the fall of 2024. In October, each department met to revise their implementation schedules in light of the addition of this new rubric, aligning their instructional plans with the goals of the Portrait of the Graduate. The agreed-upon goal for this year was to better align content area rubrics with the Portrait of the Graduate competencies and to increase the frequency of rubric use in classrooms. Teachers are now tracking the use of all rubrics, including the Authentic Innovator rubric, through PowerSchool, which allows for consistent monitoring of student progress and performance.
At Coventry High School (CHS), the integration of all Portrait of the Graduate rubrics, including the Authentic Innovator, has been successfully implemented. Faculty members reviewed and approved the rubrics in faculty meetings, ensuring a unified approach to their use. As the rubrics are tracked throughout the year, teachers continue to assess and refine their strategies to incorporate the competencies into their instructional practices. This process is designed to foster an educational environment where students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills in alignment with the district's vision for graduate success.
