On Saturday, October 19, 2024, six members of the Coventry High School (CHS) and Capt. Nathan Hale Middle School (CNH) Jazz Bands participated in Connecticut’s second ever Jazz Girls Day festival. Jazz Girls Day was founded by University of South Carolina School of Music faculty member Dr. Colleen Clark. Dr. Clark always loved jazz but noticed a lack of female participation. She founded Jazz Girls Day with the hope to inspire more girls to get involved in performing jazz music. The second ever Connecticut Jazz Girls Day was held at Dr. Clark’s alma mater, Bacon Academy. Students worked with Dr. Clark along with other jazz faculty from The University of South Carolina School of Music. Students learned new music, improvisation techniques, and the history of females in jazz music. CHS and CNH students had a fantastic day of learning and celebrating females in jazz music!
CHS Students Megumi Mitchell,
