A Note from Mrs. Hammer

Spring Break Is Here…

And it is well earned!

For our students, we hope the days ahead bring a mix of fun, fresh air, a little adventure, and some well deserved downtime. For our families, we know this week can look very different depending on your schedules, and we hope you are able to find small moments that feel like a pause from the usual routine.

When we come back, we will be heading into the final stretch of the school year. These last two months are where so much growth happens. Showing up each day, leaning into learning, and making kind, thoughtful choices will help our students finish strong. We will keep cheering them on at school, and your support at home makes all the difference.

Our staff will be doing the same, taking this time to unplug and recharge. The best way to support that is by holding off on emails, phone calls, and Seesaw messages during the break so everyone can return ready for a strong finish together.

Thank you for all the ways you show up for your children and for our school community. Wishing you a week that includes at least a few moments to catch your breath and enjoy time together.

We return to school Monday, April 20th and look forward to hearing all about the highlights your children are excited to share!

When sending an email communication to me, please also include Mrs. Morrison (kmorrison@coventryct.org).

Congratulations to...GHR, Our "Sister" School

They’ve been named the 2026 Elementary School of the Year by the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS). They were recognized for their supportive,  inclusive, and equitable school community, in addition to their academic achievement and growth. WAY TO GO GHR students, staff, and families!

Check out the Chronicle article highlighting the prestigious recognition!

A Couple Staffing Updates

The 2026-2027 school year will bring some staffing changes to CGS!

  • Mrs. Erin Hazzard, currently a Grade 1 teacher, will be joining our literacy team as a Reading Interventionist!
  • Mrs. Ashley Dunnack, currently our school nurse, will be “graduating” CGS and moving to GHR right alongside our second graders!
  • Mrs. Carolina McConnell, currently a Grade 2 teacher will be leaving CGS to pursue opportunities in educational leadership!

In addition, due to increased enrollment, along with student needs, we’ll be adding an additional Kindergarten and Grade 2 classroom. Our hiring advisory committees have been VERY busy interviewing and observing demonstration lessons and we look forward to adding some new educators to our CGS family in the very near future!

Ask Me About...

Below you’ll find 2-3 questions from your child’s grade-level team and specials’ teachers that connect directly to what they’ve been learning; both in academics, related arts,  and in social-emotional learning lessons. These are great conversation starters to help your child share, reflect on their day/week, and celebrate their learning with you.

Ask your KINDERGARTNER…

  • To compare and contrast life long ago with life today. How was school and home different?
  •  To work on math fluency! Show and tell ways to make 10!
  • Take time this week to recharge without devices: read  books, have  picnics outside, draw and color, or play  board games!
  • Music: Can you sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb”?

Ask your 1st GRADER…

  • How is wind a powerful force?
  • Can you add 19+11 by regrouping the ones?
  • Can you spell bugs, rented, grunting?
  • How do animals and plants use their parts to grow and/or survive during different times of the day?
  • Music: Can you sing “Bow Wow Wow”?

Ask your 2nd GRADER…

  • Can you name some specific types of quadrilaterals? What is the same and different about them?
  • What do you remember from Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech?
  • What is the job of an adverb in a sentence? What is the adverb in this sentence? The students ran quickly up the stairs on the trip.
  • Music: What are the two types of musical notes that we are learning to read?
