A Note from Mrs. Hammer
Spotlight on Positive School Climate at CGS and Beyond!
This week, several CGS teachers, six student leaders from Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2, and myself joined our intermediate school partners to share how Coventry Public Schools is nurturing a positive school climate across grades K-5. A school’s climate is the overall feel of daily life in the building. It reflects how students and adults treat one another, the sense of safety and belonging everyone experiences, and the routines and expectations that help children learn and grow.
At CGS, this work comes to life through our PBIS initiatives, thoughtful professional learning for teachers, and the student centered systems we use every day. From Flip, Flip Hooray raffle winners to our High Tide Heroes celebrations and daily video morning announcements that reinforce shared expectations, our students are actively shaping a joyful and respectful community. Teachers continue to deepen their expertise through ongoing learning and collaboration so that our approach remains consistent and responsive.
We’re sharing the presentation below and invite you to review it to see how our cohesive K-5 model supports children as they move through each grade!
If you’re interested in what our raffle prizes are for the month of December, you can take a peek here!
And a quick reminder…when sending an email communication to me, please also include Mrs. Morrison (kmorrison@coventryct.org).

Remote Snow Days
As we head into mid-December, this is a reminder that the Board of Education has approved the use of 2 remote learning days this school year. On remote learning days, the schedule is abbreviated to provide time for live, academic programming. Our schedule is posted on the district website: https://www.coventrypublicschools.org/district/hourslocations
Students may be sent home with their Chromebooks when inclement weather is anticipated, however this is a PRECAUTION. You will always receive official notification from the Superintendent's Office prior to the start of school, if we're operating remotely.
Ask Me About
Below you’ll find 2-3 questions from your child’s grade-level team and specials’ teachers that connect directly to what they’ve been learning; both in academics, related arts, and in social-emotional learning lessons. These are great conversation starters to help your child share, reflect on their day/week, and celebrate their learning with you.
Ask your KINDERGARTNER…
- What do farm animals do to help us?
- About our letters qu, queen, /qu/ and z, zebra, /z/!

- How do you spell your new trick words where? there? here?
- What were some of Polite Penguin’s challenges for your class this week?
- What prize(s) are you hoping to win with your Flip, Flip, Hurray cards? What did you earn Flip, Flip Hurray cards for this week?
Ask your 2nd GRADER…
- Why were the buffalo so important to the Native Americans?
- What things do we measure around our homes?
- What are some holiday traditions celebrated by your family?
