Capt. Nathan Hale School Students Explore Storytelling with Author and Illustrator Jonathan Todd

On Tuesday, October 28th, students at Capt. Nathan Hale School (CNH) participated in a free after-school literacy event that celebrated creativity, collaboration, and the joy of reading. The event featured an author visit from Jonathan Todd, writer and illustrator of the graphic novel Timid, along with a series of reading-based activities and a student raffle.

During the presentation, Mr. Todd shared his personal journey as a writer and illustrator, discussing what inspired him to tell his own stories and create original characters. Students then took part in a variety of literacy games and activities designed to foster imagination, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for storytelling. Several lucky participants went home with signed copies of Timid.

In addition to the evening event, a small group of students had the unique opportunity to attend a Graphic Novel Workshop with Mr. Todd during the school day. Participants learned about the creative process behind graphic novels from brainstorming story ideas and developing characters to sketching panels and writing dialogue.

Students are encouraged to share the final versions of their graphic novel projects with CNH’s student newspaper, Unroll the Scroll.
