Coventry Public Schools 4th Annual Family STEAM Night Draws Large Crowd!

Paula Sandahl

Coventry Public Schools hosted its 4th Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) night on the evening of March 28, 2024, at the Capt. Nathan Hale School/Coventry High School complex. Teachers, students, and staff from across the district, along with students from the UConn Future Educators and UConn Engineering Ambassadors Presentation Team organized and provided stations for people of all ages to engage in various STEAM related activities.

Families were first welcomed into the Library Media Center where many hands-on interactive stations and a prize raffle were available. Ten lucky families took home science kits and gift cards. The event extended into the middle school and high school gyms, as well as included activities and pizza and snacks in the halls. A quiet space for STEAM related reading and a mosaic art poster was
provided in the Digital Den.

As in previous years, families had the opportunity to explore STEAM across the district through interactive stations using VR goggles, green screen technology, 3D pens, building with Keva Planks, Legos and Rigamajigs, Osmo, and Spheros. A station that included numerous 3D printers demonstrated how 3D printing is used in Coventry, while another station included drone demonstrations. New stations this year included terrariums, Makey Makey game controller, building with kid-sized magnetic tiles, a wrecking ball activity from Wee Engineers and an informational table on eclipses. Last, a quiet area was available in which there was a mosaic poster and a carpet with STEAM related books for independent reading.

In addition to the interactive exhibits, the event included displays to show some of the many ways our students are engaging in STEAM in and out of the classroom. CT Invention Convention entries and Science Olympiad events were on exhibit in the middle school gym, while information about the Project Lead the Way curriculum was displayed in the Library Media Center.
